SDM College of Engineering and Technology is affiliated to Visveswaraiah Technological University (VTU), Belgaum. It is now an autonomous body. It is the first Institute of North Karnataka, India to get accreditation for all its courses by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi. It was established in 1979.
SDMCET, founded in 1979, ranks among the top 5% (91 out of 1350) of Indian engineering colleges. The college has been granted autonomous status. As per the survey by Competition Success Review and GHRDC done in 2009, SDMCET stands 38th in the list of Engineering Colleges of Excellence in India.
SDMCET ranked 24th among the top 50 private engineering colleges of India published by the Mint (The Wall Street Journal) in 2009.

Infrastructure
About 70 Acres of Land.
Each department or branch has its own laboratories as required by the curriculum. Every department has its own computer centre apart from the centralised one. The Library has books and journals on subjects taught in the college. There is an auditorium to conduct cultural and other events. The college has a play ground, canteen and post office within campus.
Hostels
There are five hostels on campus, three for boys and two for girls. Shalmala was the first hostel to be built, Netravathi and Narmada is the latest hostel. Sharavati and Hemavati is the hostel for girls.
